Helping my child to learn

Learning in Year 2

In Year 2, we empower children to become confident and expressive writers who can communicate their ideas effectively across a range of genres and purposes. Through interactive writing workshops, creative storytelling sessions, and engaging writing tasks, children explore the writing process from building ideas to editing and publishing their work. We focus on developing essential writing skills such as sentence structure, punctuation, grammar, and vocabulary, while also encouraging creativity, imagination, and self-expression. Children have the opportunity to write for different audiences and purposes, including narratives, recounts, reports, and poetry. Our goal is to instill a sense of pride and accomplishment in every child as they discover the joy of writing and sharing their stories with others.

Curriculum Overview:

In addition to our focus on literacy, the Year 2 curriculum at Weeke Primary School encompasses a wide range of subjects designed to provide a well-rounded education and foster holistic development. Alongside English, children explore Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Art, Music, Design and Technology, and Physical Education. Our curriculum is carefully structured to build upon children's prior knowledge and skills, while also challenging them to think critically, solve problems, and collaborate with others.

Assessment and Support: Assessment in Year 2 is ongoing and personalised to meet the needs of individual learners. Teachers use a variety of formative and summative assessment strategies to monitor children's progress, identify areas for growth, and provide targeted support and intervention where needed. We believe in celebrating every child's achievements and fostering a growth mindset that encourages perseverance, resilience, and a willingness to take risks.

Home-School Partnership: We recognise the importance of a strong partnership between home and school in supporting children's learning and development. We encourage parents/carers to be actively involved in their child's education, whether through reading at home, practicing key skills, or engaging in enrichment activities. Regular communication channels such as newsletters, parent meetings, and class updates provide opportunities for parents to stay informed about their child's progress and learning experiences.

At Weeke Primary School, we are dedicated to providing a supportive and enriching learning environment where every child can reach their full potential. We believe that Year 2 is a critical stage in a child's educational journey, and we are committed to nurturing their love for reading and writing, while also equipping them with the skills they need to succeed in the future.
